Back to reality! I had a much needed, relaxing spring break last week! I thought I’d share my beach-bag essentials for those of you who have not started break, or could use a weekend escape!

Calypso is my go-to clothing and accessory essential. Growing up in South Florida, throwing on a cover-up over a bikini is the next step after a cup of coffee-I forgot how laidback vacation life is! I am loving my new Triangl bikini, made with neoprene (wetsuit material) which holds everything together, thank goodness! The Jack Rogers are from Gilt, giving a bohemian twist to the preppy-classic sandal.

A beach vacation just wouldn’t be complete without Maui Babe and a Nicholas Sparks novel! This one made me bawl my eyes out, but it is a great read for all of those hopeless romantics out there!

As for now, I’m back in my routine…I’ll be dreaming of my happy place and hoping my tan doesn’t fade too quickly!

Reality Check

You Call Me a Homebody, I Wonder Why…

Image

It took me all the way until going to college to realize how truly blessed I am to live in sunny South Florida. Growing up, instead of “snow days”, we had “hurricane days” and our weekends consisted of lounging at the beach or laying a towel out in the backyard to do homework.

Once I got to Dallas, reality set in. There are seasons? Those really exist? Luckily, the seasons in Dallas aren’t nearly as grueling as the cold, brutal winters in the Northeast. However, the cold icy snow was enough for me to book weekend trips home many times during my freshman year…

I’m writing this post because I want to express my gratitude to my family for picking such a wonderful place to live. Although I wanted to be home most of the time during my freshman year, I have changed that thought into always knowing that I have a beautiful home-base that is always going to be there. This coming Fall, I will be studying abroad in Australia, and it will be so great knowing that home is never leaving and that this is the time to venture out and explore new places. Luckily there will be a beach there, so being homesick will not be from beach-deprivation! (Just my amazing home, parents, sister, doggies, and dad’s amazing cooking, and my infamous “manny”)

Last week, I shared my happy place with you. This week, I share with you my home-base, the source of my happy place. I can’t wait to be home for Spring Break to spend time with my family, close friends, and this guy!

And We All Float On…

It feels like every week begins and there is a long to-do list to accomplish. I have been going at this way of being for a few months now, and it’s safe to say that it’s time for a break! I still have another week until I will be greeted by my loving doggies, supportive family, and the sweet salt air. But for now, I have to focus on getting through the finish line, which is a difficult task. When I feel like the workload is piling on and there’s no way out, I find my happy place…

Image

No matter where I am, I can close my eyes and go right where I gain clarity. I am laying back in the ocean, listening to the sound of shells rolling in the shore break and the winding of boat propellers in the distance. The water ripples dash on my cheeks as I bob up and down. The sun warms my face, and I am in a complete state of bliss.

I feel like I’ve lost this place and have been brought back to it recently. Everyday, I dwell on what was, what can’t be fixed, which in turn wastes my energy and potential to be happy with what is. Returning to my happy place reminded taught me to take a step back, because I’m not alone. Everyone has their own journey with many obstacles, and we all handle them different. So instead of letting those tests I spent days preparing for, move on. In the words of Modest Mouse: “Don’t worry even if things end up a bit too heavy we all float on alright.”

Everything is a lesson, and I can only move forward in order to improve. If I don’t let it go, then the past will eat away at my thoughts, which is not healthy. So I’m taking this thought and running with it, because life goes on, and there are so many reasons to be content with what is.

Where is your happy place? If you don’t have one, just close your eyes and think of the first thing that brings comfort and clarity 🙂

Astavakrasana- say that again?

Today in my 6am Mountain practice, I mastered Astavakrasana- also known as eight angle pose in normal speak. Waking up at 5:30 is never an easy task, but it pays off to start the day as the sun rises. My foggy brain progressively clarifies throughout the practice and bring peace to my day. There are many times where I am not focused- thinking about school, where I’m going to get food after, or how I’m going to handle a problem with a friend. Today was not one of those days. I think it’s because it is the first thing I did today, making it a clean slate to set my daily intention. I have been disciplining myself to wake up for these early classes, and after today I can say it makes a huge difference!

Oh yeah! This is what eight angle pose looks like-Image

That’s not me of course, but I want to get a picture of me doing it next time! The word Astavakrasana is rooted from the word “asta”, meaning eight, and “vakra”, meaning bent. The teacher challenged us in the pose to exit by undoing your bottom foot, then bringing it back behind you and balancing in Running Man pose. I didn’t think that I could do that, but I had enough hope to try and mastered that too-although I did plop onto my stomach shortly after-but I still did it!

This is a perfect example of why I love yoga so much. It challenges the body and the mind, and I can only learn more by going deeper and trying new things. I can already tell you that today is going to be a good day, and it’s only 8:30am!

P.S.  I’m going to remake this picture when I go abroad to Australia next fall! 🙂Image

Eat Your Greens

Image

We all know that leafy greens are a very important aspect to our diet. I love big salads for lunch-especially the Kale Salad at Origin. Sometimes I have to try to make my own and it’s just not the same-I’m not a chef when it comes to salads! That’s why I love making green smoothies some mornings for breakfast. It’s very easy to blend some kale and/or spinach into your favorite smoothie mixture and hide the taste. Green smoothies don’t look very appetizing, especially when they mix with blueberries, but I promise they taste great! Here is one of my favorite morning go-to recipes:

Green Smoothie:

Two handfuls of spinach or baby kale

1 frozen banana

1 cup of frozen peaches (you can use mango or pineapple-or mix them all!)

1-2 cups of almond milk or coconut water (depending on desired consistency)

1 tablespoon of flaxseeds, chia seeds, coconut oil and/or maca powder

Optional: almond buter, raw honey, agave, or pitted dates for sweetness

Blend the ingredients until smooth. I also like to sprinkle some goji berries on top. If this is too filling, you can seal any extra in a mason jar and snack that day. Enjoy!

Yoga Challenge Results

This past week, I completed my own personal yoga challenge at Gaia Flow Yoga in Uptown. My challenge was to discipline myself and to slow down with the more gentle practices. I used to only attend the power-based classes: Ocean, Mountain, and Weekend Warrior. I enjoy these three because they are challenging and leave me feeling like I got a great workout.

My first new class was the Gentle Waves practice. It is described as more beginner-based, with all levels welcome. I found myself frustrated most of the time, trying to go into deeper and more advanced poses. I could tell that the instructor wanted me to take it down a few notches, and that bothered me. After the class, however, I realized the purpose of my challenge was to take a step (or four!) back and make it more of a restorative practice. I will definitely be trying the class again for this purpose!

Still Water Yin was another challenge on the mind. I used to loathe stretching-based classes because I would find myself starting at the clock every second with my mind wandering aimlessly. In this particular class, during the many hip opening poses along with long stretches between, I felt a release of emotions and stress. I never really believed that stretching had the potential to do that, but I felt amazing during and after the practice!

Desert is the final piece to the three main practices at Gaia Flow (Ocean and Mountain being the other two). I never tried it before because the * next to the title implied “gentle” and “beginner”, which I believed was not made for me. In this class, we held poses longer and did many heart opening poses. This meditative practice is definitely worth going again!

G-Ashtanga is only offered two times a week, so it was more difficult for me to try it in the past. The only one I can take this semester is the 7:15 a.m. class on Saturday. I think the bigger challenge was rolling out of bed…The intermediate/advanced class brought me back to the beginning of my yoga journey. I started with Ashtanga classes as a middle-schooler, and forgot how much I enjoy the change from Vinyasa. I would definitely wake up early for that again!

I encourage you to challenge yourself! It doesn’t have to involve yoga or exercise, but something that takes you out of your comfort zone and into a new way of being. This was a great idea for me, making me look forward to the next challenge idea soon! 🙂

Wherever I go, I must find a yoga studio to practice. Yoga has been a part of my life for about 10 years now. It is my escape from reality, bringing clarity to any situation. My favorite Dallas studio is Gaia Flow Yoga in Uptown. The studio offers power vinyasa, my favorite, but they also have slower, restorative and meditative practices. I prefer more fast-paced, challenging classes, making their “Ocean” and “Mountain” practice my go-to.

As I continue my health and wellness journey, my newest goal is to slow down and give some new styles a try. So this week, I will be taking on my personal yoga challenge at Gaia Flow by trying every style practice that they have to offer. I believe that this challenge is a great way for me to slow down, try new things, and continue to have an open mind. Life is a journey for everyone, and challenging the mind, body, and soul is a great way to learn who you want to be!
